The super easy way for N900 owners. For extension developers or users who would like to keep up with the latest and greatest copies of Mobile Firefox, Joel Maher is graciously hosting a debian repository (UPDATE: an official repository is now available–URL has been changed from Joel’s to official):
- In MicroB, the default browser, navigate to http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/repos/1.9.2_multi/1.9.2_multi_nightly.install (short url: http://bit.ly/6ccalh).
- You will be asked to add the catalog, which has the nightly packages needed. Click Add.
- “fennec” will now be available as a package in the application manager from the “Download” menu. Install it.
- Watch for the yellow exclamation mark in your notification area every morning, or whenever you feel like it. Your software updates will include fennec now (you will also see entries for “xulrunner”–Fennec depends on this, so install it too).
We could definitely use your help testing as we grind towards our 1.0 release. If you have any thoughts or find a bug, please ping us on IRC (irc.mozilla.org, channel #mobile) or file a bug.
Nice to have an easy way now to use the nightly builds. There’s a lot of work to do on the N900’s build to get a better beta version and maybe someday a release candidate too.
Oh, and please, please make fennec an “optified” application! The how and why: http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/Maemo_5_Developer_Guide/Packaging,_Deploying_and_Distributing/Installing_under_opt_and_MyDocs
At the moment again I’m not able to upgrade fennec – not enough space in / :-(
There is also an bugzilla entry for this: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=526791
Uwe,
I confirmed your bug; it is indeed an important one. As the bug says we were crashing when the build was in opt. Sorry about the space problems :( There’s some good stuff coming up in the nightlies, including a zoom fix that didn’t land for b5, faster preferences and awesomebox, and a faster path for Flash. A better Fennec is definitely in the works!
